An incursion into Wales to the fine old town of Ruthin and its red (rhudd) fort (din).
You approach Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd from the spectacular Bwlch Penbarras, crossing the Clwydian range of mountains the 'easy' way, although the descent to Ruthin is 'interesting' enough that admiring the view might be a bit of a challenge.
The Perm sets off from Woodford for Waverton, over the Cheshire Plain via Vale Royal, Davenham and Cotebrook. After all those quiet lanes, the ride goes into Chester City Centre, alongside the River Dee, then out into Wales via Kinnertion and past the former youth hostel at Maeshafn. Penbarras is the literal high point of the ride before the exhilarating descent to Ruthin.
The return journey goes through the Nant y Garth Pass and Bwlchgwyn to Wrexham and Bangor-is-y-coed before returning to England at Malpas. The finish at Woodford is reached using the well-used cyclists route through Church Minshull.
